Sri Lanka Travel Essentials for Women

Whether it’s your first international holiday or a much-awaited girls’ getaway, packing smart truly makes all the difference. At Migrant Musings & Co., we curate some special edition women-only trips for ladies aged 45–65, creating space to explore, bond, and finally experience the adventures that were once put on hold.

And this time, we’re heading to Sri Lanka – an island that has it all. From ancient temples and lush tea plantations to scenic train rides, wildlife safaris, and relaxed beach days, Sri Lanka offers the perfect mix of culture, comfort, and slow travel. To make your journey effortless, we’ve put together this Sri Lanka packing guide, thoughtfully designed with you in mind – so you can focus less on what to pack and more on making memories before you zip up that suitcase.

1. Important Travel Essentials

  • Visa Information

Sri Lanka is easy to travel to for Indian passport holders. While it isn’t completely visa-free, Indians need to apply for a Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before travel.

The good news? Our team will apply for and share your ETA. Make sure that you have completed your mandatory MM&Co. Form and uploaded all your documents in order for us to process this.

  • Documents

    • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity from date of departure
    • Printed travel insurance
    • Round trip flight tickets
    • Copies/photos of important docs (stored separately)

2. Currency & Expenses in Sri Lanka

On average, travellers spend around INR 30,000 – 35,000 for meals, shopping, and optional activities over a week-long trip in Sri Lanka. Actual expenses may vary depending on personal shopping habits, food choices, and the experiences you opt for.

💡 Pro tip: Convert  to Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR) at Colombo airport instead of an Indian airport as they offer a better rate there.

You can also use forex cards. Make sure to activate the card before leaving for your trip. Niyo Global is a good one which we recommend.

3. What to Wear in Sri Lanka

  • Sri Lanka is tropical: airy, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are best.

    • 3–4 pairs of lightweight trousers or long skirts (comfortable for temples & towns)
    • 1 light cardigan or shawl (for cooler mornings/evenings)
    • 1 lightweight rain jacket or compact umbrella (it can have showers)
    • Colourful dresses, suits and more – let your vibrant self out this holiday!
    • Comfortable walking shoes – breathable and supportive for city walks & light sightseeing
    • Sandals/flip-flops – for beaches or relaxing evenings
    • 1 saree for some MM&Co. Special Bollywood fun!

Temples and sacred sites require shoulders and knees covered:

    • Long skirts or trousers and tops that cover shoulders are essential.
    • A scarf or wrap (multipurpose for modesty and sun protection) is very handy.

4. Beach & Swim Essentials

    • 1 swimwear
    • Sunscreen (lots of it!)
    • Sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat/cap
    • Water socks – useful at beaches with pebbles or shells
    • Light/ dri fit towel for beach days
    • Polybags for wet clothes

5. Health & Safety Must-Haves

    • Your prescription medicines
    • Pain balms, general first-aid, and motion sickness tablets (essential for the fast boat to Nusa Penida)
    • Hand sanitiser and wet wipes
    • Travel insurance (mandatory for all MM&Co. trips, and highly recommended in general). You can consider ICICI Lombard.

6. Tech & Handy Extras

    • Universal travel adapter
    • Mobile phone & charger + power bank
    • Camera or smartphone with extra storage (for memories!)
    • Reusable water bottle – hydration matters in warm climates
    • Packing cubes or pouches – to organize outfits & essentials
    • UNO, playing cards, Frisbee, or a mini speaker – because our evenings often turn into giggle-filled game nights
    •

7. Bonus Tip

In the weeks leading up to your trip, try fitting in a 30-minute daily walk. It’ll help you feel more comfortable for all the walking, exploring, and spontaneous dancing that Sri Lanka has in store!

8. Pack Light

Please note: Only 1 suitcase is allowed per person. 1 purse/ handbag and 1 suitcase only, kindly, adhere to this mandatory requirement as our logistical arrangements are made that way.

Final Word

Sri Lanka in February is beautiful. Packing with comfort means you can relax, enjoy, and make the most of your wonderful women-only getaway!
